Music Therapy in Aged Care

JIG provides music therapy programs in aged care facilities, offering both individual and group sessions for residents.  Music therapy was identified by The Lancet’s 2017 Commission into Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care, as one of the most promising evidence-based psychological interventions currently available. A large body of research, including studies funded by Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council, informs a growing number of established music therapy programs designed to support formal and informal carers and people living with dementia.

In the 2021 Final Report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, it was recommended that all residential aged care services provide allied health care, including music therapy, as part of best practice to support residents' wellbeing.

Music therapy interventions seek to improve residents’ quality of life, particularly addressing social, psychological, and emotional/spiritual needs through the use of music and the therapeutic relationship. Music therapy provides cognitive and sensory stimulation, creating opportunities for residents to maintain and improve their speech and communication skills, as well as foster connections with other residents, staff, family members and their own cultural backgrounds.

Music Therapy can be for anyone, but is often most beneficial for residents experiencing:

  • Isolation, both physical and psychological

  • Challenges with communication (English as second language, non-verbal)

  • Challenging behaviours associated with dementia

  • Loss of social connections and family relationships

  • Depression or psychological distress

  • Cognitive decline

  • Challenges engaging in other programs or activities
